The Blue of a Dress

Last night I came across a photograph
of us at some long-ago party
and thought how the blue of a dress
can become bigger than a room,
bigger than a house, bigger than the
ground you stand on, until you feel
at sea no matter where you look.
I tried to remember that party,
but couldn't recall much -
Just that girl, her blue dress
and the way you smiled at her.
