IBPC Update Aug 2007 - Jan 2008
In the September Interboard Poetry Competition (IBPC), judged by Deborah Bogen, Desert Moon Review remarkably achieved both first and second when Laura Polley won first prize with her poem “Beached” and Sarah Sloat won second with “Ghazal of the Honed Knife”.
For Laura and Sarah’s winning poems, visit WebDelSol's IBPC site where you can also find links to the results from all past IBPC months. Many congratulations to Laura and Sarah on receiving this wonderful recognition!
In the December IBPC, honorable mentions were awarded to Laurie Byro for her poem, “My Mother’s Bones” and to Christopher T. George for his poem, “Mersey Mersey Me”. The December winners and honorable mentions along with commentary by judge E. Ethelbert Miller can be read at DMR's IBPC Results for December 2007 page.
There were no accolades for DMR in August or October. In regard to the November contest, the administration of IBPC announced in late December at the same time they released the December results that there had been an insufficient number of entries for the month and that there would be no winners. The decision was also made, it was stated, because of delays in the October judging, to allow the process to get back on track.
However, on urging by Desert Moon and other boards, the decision has been reversed, and the poems received for November will be considered by outgoing judge E. Ethelbert Miller. The results are expected shortly.
The poets that DMR nominated for November are Dave Rowley (“Stove with Cellophane Flame”), Mitchell Geller (“Neruda Love Songs”), and Laurie Byro (“Diddling”). We wish Dave, Mitchell, and Laurie luck. We also thank the administration of IBPC for reconsidering their decision in regard to November’s contest.
For January, by DMR members’ votes, the following poems were nominated and forwarded to IBPC:
“Festive Attire” – Mitchell Geller
“The Bottle Tree” – Allen M. Weber
“‘Come Back to the Raft Ag’in, Huck Honey!’” – Guy Kettelhack
The best of luck to Mitchell, Allen, and Guy in the January contest, which we hear will be judged by Fleda Brown.
In conclusion, Desert Moon Review congratulates all the recognized and nominated poets in the months of August through January.
